Worksite Screening: Promoting Employee Health

Employers are beginning to view employee health as an investment, not a cost. Worksite health screening is seen increasingly as a tool in maximizing that investment by reducing absenteeism, improving employee health, and boosting productivity. One of the most common worksite screening programs is for breast cancer.

  • COORS BREWING COMPANY initiated the first corporate mammography program in the country for women employees and spouses of male employees and retirees.

  • ASTRAZENECA PHARMACEUTICALS, after it merged with Zeneca Inc., in 2000, continued its worksite mammography program begun by Zeneca in 1989 because of its enormous success.

  • THE CITY OF SAN JOSE, California, has implemented a Cancer Screening Release Time Program to give San Jose civil service employees time-off with pay to receive breast (and prostate) cancer screening. Says San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales: "Early diagnosis can save lives. This program will be relatively easy to implement for the City, and we can become a model for other employers. By investing in the health of their employees, businesses can improve their bottom line, protect the quality of life in the workplace, and ensure their long-term productivity."
