Healthy People 2010:
Reduce the Breast Cancer Death Rate & Increase Mammography Screening

Created by scientists within and outside the federal government, Healthy People 2010 is a comprehensive set of disease prevention and health promotion objectives for the nation. It identifies a range of public health priorities, along with measurable objectives, in such disease areas as cancer, chronic kidney disease, stroke, heart disease, and respiratory diseases.1 Among its primary health goals is a reduction in the breast cancer death rate through increased use of mammography. Healthy People 2010 Goals

  • Reduce the breast cancer death rate.
    Target: 22.3 deaths per 100,00 females
    Baseline: 27.9 breast cancer deaths per 100,00 females occurred in 1998 (age adjusted to the year 2000 standard population)
    Data Source: National Vital Statistics System (NVSS), CDC, NCHS

  • Increase the proportion of women aged 40 years and older who have received a mammogram within the preceding 2 years.
    Target: 70 percent
    Baseline: 67 percent of women aged 40 years and older received a mammogram within the preceding 2 years in 1998 (age adjusted to the year 2000 standard population)
